Athletic Club honour LFC legend Jamie Carragher with special award

Athletic Club have announced Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher as the recipient of their ‘One-Club Man’ accolade for 2025.

The defender spent his entire professional career with the Reds and, with his 737 appearances, is second only to Ian Callaghan for the highest number of games in LFC history.

A graduate through the club’s youth system, Carragher debuted in January 1997 and by the new millennium was a mainstay of the team at Anfield.

He featured in 58 of Liverpool’s 63 fixtures during an historic 2000-01 season in which Gerard Houllier’s side landed a cup treble of League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup glory.

UEFA Super Cup success followed in 2001 and a second League Cup winner’s medal was collected in 2003, before Carragher took his own game to new heights having been redeployed from predominantly a full-back to centre-half by Rafael Benitez.

The Bootle lad’s performances throughout the Reds’ run to a miraculous Champions League triumph in Istanbul in 2005 have deservedly gone down in folklore.

The Bootle lad’s performances throughout the Reds’ run to a miraculous Champions League triumph in Istanbul in 2005 have deservedly gone down in folklore.

He aided another FA Cup victory a year later, and was part of the side that again reached the European Cup final in 2007, though in a rematch with AC Milan it was the Italians who prevailed on that occasion.

A long-serving vice-captain to Steven Gerrard, the No.23 wore the armband for Liverpool 94 times and his longevity was reflected in the final honour of his career - the 2012 League Cup - coming more than 15 years after his senior bow.

The last of his mammoth appearance tally came in May 2013 as Carragher, who was also an England international, chose to hang up his boots at the conclusion of that season.

After winning the Champions League, being a one-club man is the biggest achievement of my career,” he said.

“It was an honour when Athletic Club got in touch. Athletic are respected everywhere in the world of football. They’re a truly unique club.

“I’m very honoured to receive this award and to know my name will always remain alongside some great footballers like [previous winners] Paolo Maldini and Carles Puyol.

“As soon as I started playing for Liverpool, I knew I wanted to be a one-club man. I like the idea that when people ask, ‘Who did you play for?’, you respond ‘Liverpool’ and nothing else. I was a supporter on the pitch.”

Carragher will be presented with the award at Athletic Club’s home, San Mames, when they host Girona in La Liga later this month.
